Healing Begins When We Finally Relax
Written by: James Harvey
On paper, I am a Doctor of Physical Therapy and a breathing instructor.
But in reality, I teach people how to relax for a living.
People come to me because they are experiencing pain, tension, and discomfort throughout their bodies. Many expect our conversations to revolve around strengthening, stretching, posture, and corrective exercises. And while those tools absolutely have their place, they are only part of the picture.
A large part of true healing comes from something much simpler and much more overlooked.
Learning how to relax.
Not just the physical body, but the mind.
The emotional body.
The nervous system as a whole.
We live in a time of constant stimulation. Screens. Notifications. Responsibilities. Expectations. Noise. Movement. Productivity. We are almost always “on,” and so often we do not even realize how overstimulated we have become.
When the body never feels safe enough to slow down, it cannot heal.
By teaching people how to breathe, how to soften, and how to allow their bodies to enter a state of calm, something remarkable happens. The body remembers what it already knows how to do.
Heal itself.
With ease.
This work is not about forcing change. It is about allowing space.
Allowing the muscles to release.
Allowing the mind to settle.
Allowing the heart to open.
When we enter a state of relaxation, the body shifts into a healing state naturally. Pain softens. Tension unwinds. Clarity returns. Energy flows differently.
So let this serve as a reminder.
Every single day, we need time away from the external world. Away from to do lists, chores, responsibilities, and the constant act of taking care of everyone else.
We need time to lie or sit with our eyes closed.
With our hearts open.
With our attention turned inward.
We need time to become more aware of our inner world.
Each time we do this, we give the body permission to relax. And each time the body relaxes, it enters a state where healing happens on its own.
Not through effort.
Not through force.
But through presence.
